Almost
everyone has felt anxious in social situations at one time or another.
Feeling awkward or uncertain, being thrust into a new situation,
being dressed differently, making "small talk"-- even questions
about appropriate manners can lead to social anxiety. Garrison Keillor,
the noted humorist of "A Prairie Home Companion," finds many who
resonate with his "shy guy" descriptions. All of us have seen children
who literally hide behind their parents and adults who remain "painfully
shy." Many are fearful of public speaking or other public performance;
some have difficulty eating with others, meeting new people, talking
with authorities, writing in front of others or using public bathrooms.
