Effective treatment for social anxiety disorder includes certain medications and psychotherapies. Because medication can only be prescribed by a medical doctor, only professionals with an M.D. or a D.O. can offer medication treatment. Nurse practitioners (N.P.s) may also prescribe medications in some cases. Psychotherapy can be provided by these individuals, as well as by a variety of mental health professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, nurses and social workers, individuals who generally have master's degrees or doctoral degrees in their specialties. Professionals are included in this referral network based only on successful completion of a continuing medical education course (CME) on social anxiety disorder or by recommendation of the Distinguished Senior Scientists who assist Madison Institute of Medicine®, Inc. (MIM), in its educational mission.
